Davor Suker scored his sixth goal of the tournament in the 36th minute, allowing Croatia to capture third place with a 2-1 victory over the Netherlands. The finish tied the best ending by a newcomer since Portugal was third in 1966. Robert Prosinecki scored the other goal for Croatia and Boudewijn Zenden scored the only goal for the Netherlands.

Defender Lilian Thuram scored his first two goals for France in the semifinals, helping France advance to its first World Cup final in the nation's history with a 2-1 win over Croatia. France though lost defender Laurent Blanc for the World Cup final when he was ejected in the 74th minute. Davor Suker scored the lone goal for Croatia, his fifth of the tournament.

Brazil 1, Netherlands 1 (Brazil wins 4-2 on penalty kicks)
Brazil won its fourth World Cup title in 1994 on penalty kicks, and earned the right to defend its title the same way by downing the Netherlands 4-2 in a shootout in Marseille. Brazilian goalkeeper Taffarel guessed correctly on all penalties and made saves on Phillip Cocu and Ronald De Boer on the Dutch's third and fourth kicks. Brazil confidently scored on all four of its kicks starting with Ronaldo. Rivaldo, substitute Emerson and captain Dunga followed with conversions of their own. Frank De Boer and Dennis Bergkamp scored the first two penalties for the Dutch. The four-time champions will play the winner of the match between host-country France and Croatia on Sunday in Saint-Denis.

Dennis Bergkamp took a 60-yard pass from defender Frank de Boer in the 90th minute and scored the winning goal to send the Netherlands to the semifinals for the first time since 1978. The goal came two minutes after Argentina's Ariel Ortega was ejected for head-butting a Dutch player.

Croatia, an independent country for only seven years since its break from Yugoslavia, advanced to the World Cup semifinals with the one-sided victory over the favored Germans. Croatia has advanced farther than any rookie World Cup team since Portugal went to the 1966 semifinals. Box Score

Laurent Blanc scored the decider in the shootout as France advanced to the final four for the first time in 12 years. Luigi Di Biagio had the fifth and final shot in the shootout for Italy, but his shot crashed into the crossbar, sparking wild celebrations at the Stade de France.

Rivaldo fired in a goal from 25 yards out in the 61st minute to send Brazil into the semifinals. It was Rivaldo's second goal of the game. The Danes could have tied the score, but Brian Laudrup shot wide from close range and Marc Rieper's header hit the crossbar with two minutes left. Box Score

Argentina 2, England 2 (Argentina wins 4-3 on penalty kicks)
Argentina needed penalty kicks to defeat England after tying the undermanned English squad 2-2 after regulation and two sudden-death overtime periods. After Roberto Ayala converted his penalty kick to give Argentina a 4-3 lead, goalkeeper Carlos Roa stopped Englishmen David Batty's penalty kick to win the game.

Striker Oliver Bierhoff scored on a header in a 86th minute, helping Germany rally from a 1-0 deficit and defeat Mexico, 2-1. Juergen Klinsmann scored his third goal of the tournament on a Mexican defensive error in the 75th minute to make the score, 1-1. Mexico's lone goal was by Luis "El Matador" Hernandez, his fourth of the World Cup.

Defender Laurent Blanc scored a golden goal in the ninth minute of the second half of overtime, the 113th minute of play, to put host nation France through to the quarterfinals with a 1-0 victory over Paraguay on Sunday at Lens. Eventually France was rewarded with the late goal to set up a Friday quarterfinal match against Italy at Saint-Denis.

Early goals from Peter Moller and Brian Laudrup gave Denmark an early cushion to work with and eventually led to a shocking 4-1 upset of favorite Nigeria on Sunday in a second-round World Cup match in Saint-Denis. The Danes were underdogs before the match started but Moller capitalized with a blast from the edge of the penalty area in the third minute off a pass from midfielder Michael Laudrup. Box Score

Forward Christian Vieri scored in the 18th minute as Italy moved through to the quarterfinals for the third consecutive World Cup with a 1-0 victory over Norway in Marseille. Norway's best opportunity came in the 71st minute, when Tore Andre Flo's header was prevented from crossing the goal line by veteran goalkeeper Gianluca Pagliuca.

Cesar Sampaio and Ronaldo each scored two goals as defending champion Brazil advanced to the quarterfinals of the World Cup with a dominant 4-1 victory over fellow South American side Chile in Paris.
